This is when Augustus was emperor in Rome and had ordered a census of the population of the empire. These details show that the event of Jesus' birth was not a dream: that indeed the Messiah joined humanity in history, on a land, in a people. The child was born in the night of our world, as a gift of God’s tenderness for a whole suffering humanity, waiting for peace and hope, waiting for justice, friendship, life and love.The message of Christmas Eve: Glory to God in the highest heavens, and peace on earth to all people loved by God, is Good News for all the victims of the suffering of our world, especially during this time of crisis and trials. The pandemic has distanced us from each other but the child of Bethlehem, by inviting us to the crib brings us closer to each other. Today, the message of Christmas is entrusted to us, the activists of Pax Christi. It must be brought to life for all, for those who have been forced to leave everything behind, for the victims of racism, discrimination, hatred and self-interest.During Christmas 2021 celebrations, we have the opportunity to reflect on this great mystery of the birth of Jesus, the child of Bethlehem, Emmanuel, God-with-us. Indeed, what does it mean for Emmanuel to come and dwell among us during this time of uncertainties, pain, divisions, anxieties, and fear? As the child, Emmanuel-God-with-us gazes on us from the humble crib, with a bright star shining its light in the world, let us come closer to the manger, hold this child wrapped in swaddling cloths in our arms and reflect further on what it means to “have no room in the inn,” no place to call home, to lie helpless among the most vulnerable people, and to be born in a world of indifference? May Jesus, born of Mary, Emmanuel-God-with-us, heal our world of brokenness and bring us true peace.
